Life is a journey and I’d like to give you some insight into mine. I was raised in Illinois and moved to Colorado at the age of 20. For the next 30 years I enjoyed every day in that beautiful state. I have traveled all over the country but Colorado is still my favorite. The journey brought me to Virginia in 2011 where I met my current wife, Jan, and her 4 amazing grown children.
I have two grown children from a previous marriage, who are now experiencing what adulthood is all about. Adulthood is not all that it’s cracked up to be. At times I think I’d rather not be an adult and, instead, enjoy being a child again. God is the One who has always been with me through thick and thin. I like to call Him Papa. He introduced Himself to me when I was in 9th grade over 40 years ago.
First disclaimer: I am not religious, quite the opposite actually. I used to call myself a Christian but now prefer “follower of Jesus.” The Christian label has too many definitions and most of them have negative connotations. I hate labels.
Second disclaimer: I am no longer a fan of the religion of Christianity as it is often represented in North America. Papa didn’t send His Son to start another religion. He sent Jesus to reconnect us to His heart, to restore the relationship He has always intended to have with each one of us since the beginning. I love the relationship I have with Papa. He lives in us! Knowing Him, walking with Him daily and experiencing His love, has helped me to discover more of who He created me to be!
And now a few specifics about the journey I have been on with Him the past 25 years. Some clarifications are needed at this point about who I am not. I am not a counselor or therapist. I have no college degree. I’m actually like most of you, an ordinary person, taking life day by day while walking with those I love. I’ve been a son, a brother, a friend, an uncle, a father, a husband, a step-dad and granddad.
I have had the privilege of crossing paths and walking alongside many women over the past 25+ years. Most of these brave women have survived the horrific traumas associated with sexual abuse specifically in their childhood. They come from all walks of life, throughout North America and the world. I have seen the One who happens to be the greatest Heart Surgeon, put back together the most shattered of broken hearts. Love does heal!
Journeys of the Heart-Mary’s Story documents many of the encounters I have had along the way as I’ve walked with these women in their journeys. Every situation, every event and every scenario described in Mary’s Story are all true life experiences they have lived through. Their names and cities have been changed to respect their privacy.
My hope is that each of us will continue in the discovery of our own heart. Your heart is a masterpiece, fashioned after its Maker. You are a reflection of Him and a gift to the rest of us! May we cherish those gifts that surround us every day. May our life also be a gift to those we walk with.
